OVERVIEW

zPDT Fixpack Software Update, release date February 23, 2018
This Fixpack release of GA-8 (51.10) includes the following updates:

  • ZAAPs are not allowed with ZARCH_ONLY
  • zOS stall due to constrained transactions
  • Fixed Incorrect Length Indication Suppression issue with awstape
  • Add warning message to gen2_init –remove to check server settings
  • Fixed LDK installation issue on SLES 12 SP2 and on OpenSUSE Leap 42.3
  • Added check if userid is greater that 8 characters
  • Fixed problem with outbound Arp Resolution which eventually lead to “Out of Xmit Buffer
    Condition”
  • Ubuntu install checking if patches are applied

In addition, the base GA-8 base driver (51.10) provides the following enhancements which are continued in 51.10:

  • The architecture level (that is, the z System instruction set) corresponds to IBM z14 machines. This involves significant enhancements to zPDT. This includes defaulting to zArchitecture for IPL operation.
    • A non-standard option allows IPLing in ESA/390 mode, but operation in z14 mode otherwise. This special operation is enabled through a cpuopt statement in your devmap, such as: cpuopt ZARCH_ONLY=NO
  • zPDT licenses are no longer required for zIIPs, although the zIIPs count toward the maximum of eight processors in a zPDT instance. zAAPs and IFLs require zPDT licenses. (In principle, zAAPs no longer exist with z14 machines.) The number of zIIPs cannot exceed the number of CPs.
  • CFCC Lvl 22
  • The awsckd device manager (that emulates 3380 and 3390 operation) has been reworked.
    • The awsckd device manager emulates an IBM 2107 control unit in place of the 3990 control unit in prior releases and newer CCW operations are handled correctly.
    • MIDAW operation is included
  • I/O counts are available with the awsstat command. This data can be especially useful when emulated disk volumes are spread among devices with very different performance characteristics.
  • The awsosa device manager corresponds approximately to the OSA-Express5 level.
    • The awsosa device manager supports promiscuous mode Ethernet, as needed for KVM operation.
    • Jumbo frames (up to 8992 bytes) are supported. (this requires that your network equipment from end to end   needs to support Jumbo frames. Inexpensive switches do not support Jumbo frames)
  • Deprecated commands/scripts are removed: ldk_server_config (replaced by clientconfig), LDKc_setup.sh (replaced by gen2_init).

 

This product is only available to Authorized ITC Customers. IBM Personnel and their Subcontractors are to use Resource Link.

System Configuration and Prerequisites. The supported levels of Linux must be at least the 64-bit version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.0 or greater, the 64-bit version of openSUSE 13.1 or greater, the 64-bit version of SLES 12 SP1 or greater, and Ubuntu 16.04 or greater. Earlier versions are not supported.

 

INSTALLATION

If installed on a clean machine (with no Safenet rpms previously installed or Safenet rpms removed and then machine rebooted), users will be able to obtain licenses right after installation. If installed on a machine that has a previous z1090 installed, A machine reboot will be required after the installation.
Once machine is back up, users will be able to obtain licenses. Failure to reboot will prevent obtaining licensing with a return code of 304 – “license not available”
This release will install over any exiting zpdt driver already installed. And any other driver will install over this release. But if you re-install an older release, the Safenet rpms will go back to the bad versions and you will not obtain licenses. For downloaded zip file:

For downloaded zip file:

  • Unzip the downloaded release file
  • Review the Readme file (.html & .pdf) for full information and instructions
  • FTP or otherwise transfer the install file (z1090-1-7.49.31.01.x86_64 in the /linux directory) to your zPDT system in the /tmp directory
  • Switch to root (UID 0) mode: su –
  • Change to the /tmp directory: cd /tmp
  • Make the program file executable: chmod 775 z1090-1-8.51.10.x86_64
  • Execute the z1090 installer program: ./z1090-1-8.51.10.x86_64
  • You will have to scroll through the license agreement then accept it. The installation should then complete.

For CDROM or .iso distributions:

  • Burn the .iso image onto a CD as an “image”. The resulting CD should have multiple files and
    directories on it.
    · See the instructions in the CD Readme file (.html and .pdf) on the CD for full information
    · Copy the z1090 file to your /tmp directory:

cp /run/media/ibmsys1/zPDT 51.08/linux/z1090* /tmp (1 See note below regarding path
to the CD)

  • Switch to root (UID 0) mode: su –
    · Change to the /tmp directory: cd /tmp
    · Make the program file executable: chmod 775 z1090-1-8.51.10.x86_64
  • · Execute the z1090 installer program:  ./z1090-1-8.51.10.x86_64
    · You will have to scroll through the license agreement then accept it. The installation should then
    complete.

1 Different releases of Linux may automatically mount the CD at a different mount point than shown
here. You may have to determine the correct path to the install file.
If you applied any IBM supplied zPDT patches to your installed system you will need to remove them before
you can install this new release. Check the documentation that came with the patches for specific removal
instructions.
You should test your system to verify that it is functioning properly. The zPDT release level is displayed as one
of the messages early in the initialization process. It should report release 51.10.
Review the External Release Letter carefully; there are significant changes.
